Wow! I debated whether or not to cast attention on this matter, but it is moving around math circles and warrants an open-airing… a serious dispute over math education and harassment between university professors (aired by Jo Boaler of Stanford):

MacArthur Mathematician et.al.

Not exactly synchrony but a recent bit of serendipity…
A couple days ago, bopping around the Web, I stumbled on a reference to Richard Preston's fascinating chapter from his 2008 book "Panic In Level 4" about the genius Chudnovsky brothers (Gregory and David) computing pi on a homemade computer in their Manhattan apartment (it's originally from a wonderful 1992 article Preston did for the New Yorker).
Such a great story I thought, even though a bit old, it might bear some ingredients for a blog post, and I went searching for my copy of Preston's book, only to find my own volume apparently dispatched to the used bookstore. I dropped the idea from my thoughts.
Then, the very next day, I looked over the names of the latest MacArthur Award winners… and there was one mathematician, 35-year-old "Maria Chudnovsky" among the lucky few -- hooray! gotta love seeing a mathematician get a MacArthur! (…frankly, I've not been too thrilled with some of the recipients in recent years :-(
Anyway, seemed like an odd coincidence to run into the "Chudnovsky" name twice in 2 days (perhaps though in Russian, "Chudnovsky" is like "Johnson" in America, I don't know ;-), so figured maybe a blogpost was in order after all (I've seen no mention of any connection between Maria and the brothers Gregory and David -- if someone knows of a relationship between them please inform us). Coincidentally, Gregory won a MacArthur himself back in 1981.

Pi = 2
A well-circulated paradox with a circle inscribed in a square results in π being equal to 4, but what I hadn't previously noticed was this similar James Tanton offering making pi equal to 2 (obviously considering these two paradoxes, pi must, on average, be equal to 3 ;-))

Are These Folks Humans or Cyborgs!?
Some people's brains are definitely wired very differently from mine....
When I first read of autistic savant Daniel Tammet's recitation of pi to over 22,500 decimals back in 2004, it seemed like a stunt beyond human comprehension, likely not to be surpassed in my lifetime… BOY, WAS I WRONG!!
It was a couple years later that I learned that Tammet's effort merely set a British and European record for pi recitation, but wasn't even close to the world record. As far back as 1981, an Indian had already recited pi to almost 32,000 digits, and a couple of Japanese blokes later greatly surpassed that endeavor. Then in 2005, a Chinese fellow, Chao Lu, would more than TRIPLE Tammet's puny ;-) performance, by reciting from memory, a phenomenal 67,890 digits of pi, and is still listed as the official record-holder by some accounts. Here's one listing of the world's top pi record-holders:

I'm not sure how these "official" designations are established though, because the current proclaimed record-holder is a former Japanese engineer, named Akira Haraguchi, who recited pi to 100,000 digits in 2006 (breaking his own prior record of almost 84,000):

Simply UNNNreal! (...Having said that though, pi has now been computed to 10 trillion digits, so HEY Akira, ya gotta ways to go yet!)

Huhhh, WHOAAAA!!!
From the "learn something new everyday" category:
I'd always thought that autistic savant Daniel Tammet's recitation of pi (from memory) to 22,514 digits in 2004 was an unbreakable (and unfathomable) world record. How WRONG I've been! Turns out that was only a puny European record...
Hat tip to "SquareCircleZ" blog for enlightening me that a prior 1995 world record, set by a 21-year-old Japanese student at 42,195 digits, was well surpassed in 2005 by a Japanese mental health counselor at 83,431 digits!!!! (Forget pi, one of these gents should be working on the Riemann Hypothesis! :-):

Holy Geekfest Batman!, I can barely remember my social security number... :-(

"The Tau Manifesto"
Mark Chu-Carroll at his blog, "Good Math, Bad Math," often posts examples of mathematical 'crackpottery' that come his way, but recently posted about an argument for why everyone's favorite number π, should really be substituted with another value tau, τ, the equivalent of 2π, and why this would all make sense in so many ways (tau is based on the radius of a circle, instead of the diameter-basis for pi). And yes, it's a serious argument:

Pi: The Number That Keeps On Giving....
Ever get the feeling that perhaps some people just have too much free time on their hands ;-)....
In news, that we've all been hungry for, it's been announced that the two-quadrillionth digit of pi has been determined... in binary... to be a zero!:

It's still the case that only a mere 2.7 trillion consecutive digits of pi are known, but powerful cloud computer techniques are now able to find specific digits much farther out. But more importantly... can these techniques help me find my car keys in the morning???

Daniel Tammet Has His Work Cut Out For Him Now ;-)
Japanese and US computer scientists claim to have calculated Pi to five trillion decimal places... just a few trillion more than the previous record! (...but I'll save some space here by not typing it out for you):
